Am I wrong to assume that whoever was holding the IP sold it off and that the new holder is just cashing in on it by producing/licensing a bunch of garbage?

Still haven't watched the live action film because it seemed not good, and the synopsis showed they squished multiple film and show story lines into just the one movie. ...I tried watching the netflix OVAs and.... I think it was not good. They are "reimagining" the series yet the very first thing they do is exactly copy the iconic swan dive scene from the original film... Idk. Just depressing. I really liked 1995 and the two SAC series

I don't think the IP has changed hands, but yup, it's been shambling like a zombie since after SAC. SAC proves that it's possible to do cool new things with the concepts, but everyone else has just been remixing it at best.

I did think the first episode of Arise was pretty good with how they reapproached the memory-faking stuff, but it's still the same concept.

Nah, I’ve reached the same assumption.
