Apparently Galapagos Tortoises are legitimately the best-tasting thing anyone has ever eaten. At least according to 18th-19th century colonial dickheads from a country that thinks jellied eel is a good idea and haven't seen anything but hard tack with maggots for 5 weeks.
Luckily the tortoises were so chill a good chunk became ship's mascots.
It helped that they stayed fresh basically forever.
Turn them upside down in the cargo hold and they’ll live for months and you can slaughter them whenever you want and you get a ton of meat for no effort.
