I've long thought that an apartment complex would be a good place for a commune. You could turn the bottom level into a laundromat/market/kitchen/cafeteria/bicycle share/other essential services for the residents. Having a market and soup kitchen downstairs would mean a lot less grocery and gas wastage. Overall you would stand to save a lot of money as a resident in a place like that.
It wouldn't come from a pretend leftist landlord, and I don't see americans being able to be debrainwormed enough to work together on a project like that either. It's a potential island of stability out there somewhere that we would have to work towards.
