Anyone know any good world maps to buy?
Something nice and big to put on a wall, but with actual proper country sizes, not some Western/colonial bullshit sizes where Greenland is as big as Africa etc lol
Personally, I like upside down maps. No reason north has to be "up" other than convention.
Unfortunately they're usually still Mercator, so you run into the same size issues. Would love to find one that isn't.
Maps with the Atlantic ocean split in half and not the Pacific are also good for giving a different perspective.
If you only care about size being accurate, and not shape, then all equal area projections are tied for first, and you can pick your favorite from the list on wikipedia.
If you want more of a compromise, Winkel tripel is generally the best. If you enjoy Soviet stuff and hunting down really obscure maps, Kavrayskiy VII is about as good.
Dymaxion, Waterman Butterfly, and Goode Homosline are all more accurate, but don't look like normal maps.
I like the Winkel Tripel projection for putting it on a wall. there's still distortion but it's minimized and doesn't look as wacky as butterfly projection
never heard of it before but that does look like one sharp projection
Robinson or Eckert IV, which aren’t very different
Get one that's just multiple images of the earth from different sides. Here's some: https://www.geoatlas.com/store/planispheres-and-globes.html?ns_version=54&p=2
Just pick the locations you want it centered on and get like three of them. Kinda expensive though lol. And those specific ones are in French since it's a French company.
Or like one content: https://www.mapsinternational.com/political-south-america-wall-map.html
Or a Pacific Ocean centered one: https://www.mapsinternational.com/world-pacificcentred-wall-map-with-flags.html
I wish e-ink was a bigger thing so you could have an updating wall map that would show different parts of the world.
the buckminster fuller one is cool if you also want a safe car and to sleep less.
The ones centered on the North Pole can often have good size and shape representations.
If you wanna be real cool, get one centered on the South Pole.
