I would imagine that most people buying a BMW are buying it for the brand to show off how much disposable income they have. IIRC they're not great cars.
70s-90s bmws were exquisitely designed machines. very reliable, easy to work on, great performance, parts really not that much more expensive and they last longer anyway. i've owned 3 and worked on 3 more regularly. it's sad to see them take this turn. long live the inline 6
