Major CW for some truly vile shit including sexual assault threats, enbyphobia, and other generally horrific reactionary seething from a supposed socialist.

I dared to mildly criticize Chapo in the most recent /r/bwf comments for purposefully misgendering Ezra Miller and my notifs have been filled with some pretty remarkable stuff for the past 2 days. The worst of it came from this supposed trans sex worker. I’ve blocked my own username for privacy. For context, I am also trans and mentioned that I have done fs sex work.

IDK what causes it but people get extremely upset about anything new and different from what they know. It's really upsetting because how much less threatening or upsetting could someone be than being non binary? It's not a threat to anyone, it doesn't cause anyone any problems, but people go berserk because they've encountered something novel that is strange to them.

It’s honestly embarrassing and when I see that kind of limited thinking I immediately discount the person as worth associating with

It feels like the same mechanism that older people used to have 20 years ago when asked to learn how to use a word processor or internet browser works. Just a visceral negative reaction to being expected to learn literally anything new. Not being able to use the VCR remote was a common meme about tech-phobes and it was never inability that was the problem but just plain blunt refusal to learn because it causes an aggressively negative reaction in them.

Maybe what we need is a drive to make learning new things a cool and positive thing to counteract it? I don't know. Something must be able to get around it.

I can tell you the idea behind it provided you don't take this as an endorsement from me. They supposedly believe that enbies are using the trans struggle to distance themselves from oppressor identity markers. The concept is that predatory men will use their adopted trans status to shutdown any conversation about their privilege and as a shield for their toxic beliefs. Essentially, they think people are claiming the enby identity in bad faith.

I think there is a kernel of truth to it. I don't doubt that there are reactionaries who will attempt to take advantage of this "new" identity marker to distract from their oppressor traits, but ultimately, so what? There is no way to identify them short of reading their diaries or something, and we can call them out for being shitty people without questioning whether they've fully internalized the identity they claim. It takes almost zero extra effort to avoid misgendering someone while dunking on them.
