Our 125 foot/40m long rope just barely reached the bottom when it opened up. we think it leads into an abandoned mine

      Limestone makes caves like this. Water is slightly acidic so buried limestone washes away.

          An incredible amount of forest in the US is new-growth forest. A ton of times when you're walking through a wooded area even remotely close to civilization, there's a high chance it used to be a farm or something.

          I wonder if this pipe was for a deep well for an old farmhouse or business.
