I dont want to seem like all the other dictator worshipping posters on this site but there should be government pressure on obese poeple of course obesiety can be linked to the economic system and our capitalist system destroying our minds but obesiety is a serious societal issue causing health problems and we can treat it for example with exercise programs for adults and especially the youth. The hardest part is to eliminate meat and sugar consumption i have no idea how that can be done without using a crushing consumption tax system

We could start by not giving gigantic sums of money to the corn and beef industries.

Instead of the government putting pressure on people to lose weight, why don’t they regulate what is allowed to be put in our food?

The easiest way to eliminate meat and sugar consumption is to not allow it or severely restrict how much of it is allowed in certain products and how much of those products are allowed to be purchased in a time period.

The government would also need to offer free services to help people lose weight like nutritionists, personal training, bariatric surgery, etc.

Instead of punishing people who are already in a bad place, make it easier for them to make changes and prevent future generations from getting there in the first place.

I don’t think just regulating corn syrup would be enough.

I’m kind of an extremist but I think sugar should be a controlled substance treated like how tobacco is now. If you want to advertise your product, it can’t have added sugar in it. Food with added sugar is in a separate section of the grocery store like alcohol.

So much sugary food is marketed to children, and I think if we’re able to limit their exposure to it, we have a better chance at preventing people from developing dependencies and addiction.

Obviously there are still children today who smoke and get alcohol, but it’s not as many children who regularly drink juice and soda.

Portion sizes is another big problem that I have less of a solution for. You can at least control what restaurants are allowed to sell, like no more than 8 oz of protein in a meal, etc.

have you seen how much meat americans eat tho? reducing meat consumption and adding healthier sides to eat with the meat would go a long way with helping to treat obesity

No. It's sugar. Eating a normal portion of meat for every meal can easily keep you under the number of calories you burn in a day.

There's really not that much to do that's directly related to meat. Encouraging lowered consumption in general and switch to non-polluting methods of transportation and processing are mainly what we need. Methane is a tiny fraction of greenhouse gas emissions compared to CO2.

i wont bother going to the the actual torture meat industry places on sentient beings but the recources and the pollutants going in to the meat industry are a huge fucking problem and they are not a tiny fraction

Methane accounts for around 16% of greenhouse gas emissions and not all of that is from animal agriculture.

"Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use" accounts for 24% of total emissions. 11% of total emissions are CO2 from the "Forestry, and Other Land Use" part. So at worst agriculture emissions (including plant ag) accounts for 13% of global emissions.

Compared to 76% of total emissions being CO2 (including the above mentioned 11%), it is a small fraction.

                      actual torture

I literally don't care. Milking a cow isn't rape, meat isn't murder, blah blah blah.

You’re literally torturing and killing a sentient being because you think they taste good. Meat is murder.

Meat is literally murder and milking is rape but that if we want to halt climate change at all we have to take everything in account and i cant see where that site takes in account the pollutants what agriculture and especcially all the waste and toxins it releases to our waters wich in turn accelerates the unavoidable destruction of our environment

The issue with obesity isn't meat, I know that's a good thing to work on because of the issues with meat for the climate and the animals themselves, but tying this to obesity goes back to old problems in specifically US dietary guidelines pushed by various companies. The problem is insulin resistance caused by sugar and an overabundance of cheap carbs. Sugar is the big one, but things like highly refined flour is another. The entire food industry spent a fuckton of time creating the lowfat narrative, etc etc. Basically, material conditions led to this more than people's individual choices somehow magically getting worse.

What we need is readily available and sufficiently high quality fat and protein sources that are low in carbs and extremely low in sugar to no sugar for the general non-active population. If we could get things like avacado oil running at a good rate cheaply with low impact that'd be wonderful. Also, things like black soybeans (low in carbs but decently high in protein), etc, that are rarely consumed.
