The unions are more popular than ever right now, much more so than the government or the media, being deliberately contrarian on an issue that literally doesn't matter but the majority of the population have brainworms about would be a huge fuck up.
They're still striking, a deliberately generic 'respects' statement costs them nothing, and strike days could well have more impact in terms of projected footfall/usage etc since we've got no idea how the next week or so if going to affect working schedules, travel, time off etc.
