Anything that's not super intense or fast paced (not looking for a shooter game or anything where I've got to be quick, something more chill. Or maybe I'll just start a new run of Disco Elysium again

Edit: thanks so much guys I just woke up to a ton of notifications and there's a lot of great stuff in this thread to try out!

Good point. I'm not above pirating, if anybody has a link or instructions on how to get whatever game for free. Also I should not though I'm playing on Mac

I primarily use IGG-games.com but FYI sometimes files will be flagged for viruses (but the site mods claim it's "false positives due to how games are cracked"). I'm not a tech nerd so I don't know what the truth is, I got nothing for someone to steal though so I just ignore it (and maybe 1 out of every 20 games or fewer I dl will get flagged for malware anyway, most games I've downloaded (and I've downloaded terabytes of shit) have no problem).

The reason I use IGG is because they have direct downloads so you don't have to worry about getting DMCA'd from torrenting. However only the google drive links and the mega.co.nz links are fast (and all the others do annoying popup shit, fake links, etc., that you have to click through like 5+ times to get to the real link and not DL some malware bullshit), and if it's a newer release the google drive links get overloaded pretty quickly

IGG has been in a lot of controversies lately. They are held responsible for shutting down one of the best piracy websites Good Old Downloads by doxing the owner and threatening to call the police on him. On top of that, they add their own DRM in their uploads, which is ironic itself. While IGG releases themselves are not malicious, their actions are the reasons why they go to untrusted list.

idk I guess that's kinda shitty but it's not like I'm giving them money. Idk what they're talking about with DRM though

as long as you're not downloading the latest AAA releases you shouldn't really worry about letters. I've torrented quite a few games without a vpn and haven't gotten any letters that I know of. malware is something I worry about more than the copyright goons, even with a careful eye it's always possible to download a fake loaded with malware.

There's a little bit of a learning curve to get the signals working correctly, but you can find lots of tutorials and you'll catch on quickly.

With openttd I can never tell if it's a good idea to worry about trying to keep station queues under control (which always seem to get way out of hand with cargodist) or just assemble a model train set and enjoy watching the infrastructure tick. The Gamer in me wants to do the former, but it always seems to run me into frustrating, unresolveable chokepoints.

There’s an option in the settings to cut the rate of time progression in half so vehicles travel just as fast, but basically all the traffic volume is halved. I usually play with that activated, since I feel like it lets you have a more realistic traffic volume so you can build a more real looking road and rail network rather than having something that looks like a train super highway or trucks leaving a factory every 10 seconds.

For pirating fitgirl, gog-games, and csrinru have always worked and been safe for me.

Grim Dawn is an arpg that can be taken pretty slowly. It's a spiritual successor to Titan Quest but it's similar enough to Diablo 2.

Project Zomboid is a very good isometric zombie survival game. You can change sandbox settings to make it as relaxed as you want. You can also focus on farming, reading, or something instead of fighting zombies.

Kenshi is a unique squad-based post apocalyptic rpg. The combat is essentially mmo combat and you can do whatever you want in it.

Mount and Blade Warband and Bannerlord are very good. Warband is older and dated now but will still be fun if you haven't tried Bannerlord yet. Bannerlord just has a lot of improvements though.

Divinity Original Sin 2 is a really good dnd game. It's turn based combat and can be pretty easy with lonewolf and physical damage.

Baldur's Gate 3 isn't fully released yet but it's made by the same people who made dos2. It's also a dnd game but in a different setting with different rules.

Kingdom Come is an ok rpg. The combat gives you the illusion of being challenging and skill based but in reality it's just almost entirely dependent on your stats. You can just use headcracker and grapple and be fine.

I bought Partisans 1941 but haven't played it yet. It looks good though, you fight nazis behind enemy lines by finding friends and scavenging I think.

Minecraft is also a game. Make sure to get fabric and sodium though. There's also Minetest which I haven't played but have heard good things about.

Gta 4 is a good game that still holds up. Gta 3 and Vice City are good but dated, don't get the released versions they are just downgrades.

Alice Madness returns looks good but it needs a laundry list of fixes to play, like some important keybinds can only be set in the config file. I always wanted to play it but it's such a bad port that I never bothered.

Splinter Cell chaos theory is good but also needs a few fixes I think.

Age of Wonders 3 is a good but hard game. I dont remember what genre it is, it's like an rts with turn based combat.

Yeah, amazing game, but has the weird Central European Chud flavour. To the point he occasionally makes the game less accurate despite being a bit of a "stitch counter" (there's another point of inaccuracy, the clothes are not nearly as well made as actual peasant clothes were. You get one bolt of fabric every 5 years, you're sure as hell gonna use proper construction, grumble, grumble...)

      SHOTS FIRED!

I really liked that game when it came out, tried to replay it though and man the combat really sucks.

Yeah it is BS. Plus the game fucked up my saves and now all of them have no inventory. Apparently its been a bug for a while and never fixed

    Like old games? Emulators.

Like old games and want to be hip? Get into RPG randomizers. Final Fantasy 1, Final Fantasy 4, Final Fantasy 6, Mario RPG, and Earthbound all have one! (the good FF6 rando is FF6WC, and the good EB rando is PK Scramble)

Like being hip and retro? Games on the Pico-8 BBS often turns into real games years later.

Want a confusing mix of games that are mostly horror or queer? Sort itch.io by free/top rated.

      This right here 👆

I would also add that if you want to play modern Switch games the Yuzu emulator is an amazing bit of tech that runs extremely well for what it is. Play older titles and even modern releases. You want chill games like Disco Elysium, try The Somnium Files or 13 Sentinels. Best of all, they'll be cheap as free. There's a couple of :reddit-logo: subs specifically dedicated to switch and Yuzu piracy to help you along

Do you like roguelikes? There's angband.live that let's you play the original angband, moria, and a bunch of variants. Slow paced and methodical gameplay.

in a very roguelike vein, backpack hero is far more addictive than it has any right to be and the link is for a free browser version that i think still has almost everything from the steam version

there's always the piles upon piles of games of past videogame libraries to play. I recommend Vimm's Lair for most of your rom needs, its a bit archaic but does the job perfectly

Unciv or Freeciv are two free Civ clones, the former being a carbon copy of Civ 5, spent a fuck ton of time on both of these

Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead is one of the most in-depth and insane games I've ever seen and it's completely free and open source, it's a zombie survival roguelike with a crazy complex crafting system that lets you disassemble and construct absolutely anything you want. The game has a very steep learning curve but it's well worth it, it's legitimately one of the best games I've ever played

Battle for Wesnoth is a free fantasy strategy game, really fun

Minetest is open-source minecraft that you can mod into being better than the original game

0 AD is a historical RTS

Xonotic is a free Quake-style FPS

Mindustry is a resource management/tower defense game similar to Factorio in that you have to collect resources and transport them to be manufactured into other resources, that you then turn into units or weapons and so on. The game is digital cocaine

There's OpenCiv, I haven't played it yet https://github.com/RyanGrieb/OpenCiv but if you like strategy games you could give it a shot

    SuperAutoPets is pretty fun too

space engine. not so much a game but it will absolutely blow your mind with it's scale and beauty. basically the entire unviverse, much of it procedurally generated but programmed by a russian astrophysist. the newest version is on steam for $ but one version behind is always free. if your idea of fun is just exploring the galaxy hopping from solar system to solar system looking for rare terrestrial planets with life.. but otherwise yeah there's not much actual gameplay (yet). eventually i think he wants to do a colonization/terraforming game.
