It's when you write really avant-garde Pop music that denies the listener instant gratification. Uber-complex, borderline noise. Flirts with Hyper-Pop and Zolo and Nowave music.
It's definitely the weakest part of my hypothesis, but thinking about it more I'd say that brief genre of angry individualistic bro rock in the early 2000s is the best definition for this. Stuff like Trapt, Papa Roach, Breaking Benjamin etc. Although thinking about it even more, that genre was largely itself part of the Anger phase in the War on Terror cultural zeitgeist, which isn't really relevant but is interesting to consider the ramifications of.
