I literally had a friendly old guy in the pub say that to me and I've been together with that woman for five years now.

    Thank you "uncle" Tony.

Everyone here is talking about the friendly guy down at the pub like he's a saint, but he's equally likely to be racist.

Ideally anyone with concerns about bigotry can stereotype their way into avoiding shitty mentors. I know sometimes that’s easier said than done though. My “friendly guy at the pub” was an older bear I met at a bar who was hosting the cast party for a local theater production. Dude is mad cool

I came here to say that. The man in the photo looks like he should be carrying a National Front sign about Tommy Robbins.

dressing like a girl and generally being a cutie ruined strange men in bar settings unfortunately

I've never met an old guy in the pub who was not wholesome as hell. I hope to one day be the old guy in the pub. Maybe since I'm almost 30, I could settle for the nearby college bar for now.

            That's fucking incredible Emma.

            Mad props.

Did you straight up go highschool grad -> undergrad -> honours -> done in 2 years doctorate without any breaks in between or did you somehow skip a step/start early?

So I completed high school with a number of college credits and was lucky enough to have completed my associates and bachelors within 3 years and was able to start a little bit on my PhD, at least in terms of prereqs and credits during undergrad, so I was able to finish my PhD in another 3 years

The real challenge was attempting to have a social life at the same time.

that guy on the right looks like he's holding up a beer in a public restroom and yeah that's the exact type of encouragement I need when I decide to take a shit in a pub restroom.

Don't go to pubs, so the closest I've encountered to the guy on the right is a bloke who used to sit at the train station and drink cans of cheap cider.

Haven't seen him since lockdown, he used to give sage advice to anyone who would listen, between complaining that Arriva trains (now transport for Wales) hadn't improved the rail infrastructure that was falling apart when it was privatised a couple of decades ago.
