Honestly I think they're done with the rights chopping for a while after abortion, which still has plenty of weight to carry political discussions through the midterms. Most of the work that needs to happen is still being brewed up in the trial courts and regulatory agencies. The supreme court hasn't experienced consequences but they are definitely hated right now at historically high levels. They probably feel their power waning.

I expect the supreme court will focus more, like some regulators including the IRS recently, onto the growing number of "small business owners" that are wholesale just ripping off the system. I've heard countless stories of these companies just being funnelled money or avoiding their taxes through loopholes that aren't being enforced.

That was fine when there was enough money to go around. But now things are retracting a bit, I expect that the fun will dry up and it will be the IRS and Supreme Court making sure that happens.

In the election ads in my area the Republican candidate keeps going off about how the democrats want to hire an “army of IRS agents” to destroy the middle class. The ads literally show little billy in the store not able to get the candy he wants because the IRS is auditing his mom I guess.

TV ads make a lot more sense when you think about how they're targeted at people whose first experience of the automobile was the Model T

Ha. They're not wrong that's exactly what's happening with the IRS. They just hired a fuck ton of auditors.

They're just wrong that it's the "democrats" doing it. Just like the democrats think it's just the republicans gathering up kids into cages. But easy enough to campaign off of.

        :deeper-sadness:

Is it not something that was initiated by the Dems?

It's not like they personally give a shit or care if rights are taken away. They're just trying to party.

Public opinion matters it's why they spend so much money trying to sway it. It's enough of a consequence to slow this kind of momentum because the opposite is also true: there's also no consequence if they don't take away more LGBTQ rights.

The supreme court justices want to feel happier at their wine receptions or ski outings. It's harder to do that if tons of folks hate you.

They're not done, but I think they'll do their best to time it until after the elections
