Been reading "Second Founding" by Eric Foner and I gotta say, the Supreme Court has always been the most consistently reactionary wing of the US government, which is in and of it self a supremely reactionary government by nature. I just got done reading about how the supreme court let some guys get away with axe-murdering a black family after a lower court found them guilty.

The first involved the scope of federal authority under the Civil Rights Act of1866. Blyew v. United States, decided in1872, arose from the gruesome ax murder of four members of a black family in Kentucky by two white men. Benjamin H. Bristow, the United States attorney in the state, removed the casefrom state to federal court because Kentucky still did not allow blacks to testify in cases involving whites. The murderers were convicted and sentenced to be executed. By a six–two vote, with Chief Justice Chase not participating, the Supreme Court overturned the convictions.
