I know that this isn’t necessarily a political subreddit but I just wanted to share how much this musical means to me. I’ve always been a republican partly because my parents are republicans and partly because I hold conservative values. I voted for Gary Johnson in 2016.

About a month ago, I first listened to the Hamilton soundtrack. That first listen was the first time I regretted not voting for Hillary Clinton in 2016. Since then, I have listened to Hamilton at least once a day. The opening line especially illustrated how immigration has shaped our country.

“How does a bastard, orphan, son of a whore and a Scotsman, Dropped in the middle of a forgotten Spot in the Caribbean by providence, impoverished, in squalor Grow up to be a hero and a scholar?”

Hamilton has showed me what rap can be. I always just assumed that rap was all about “bitches” and “hoes” and doing drugs but Hamilton is so much more than that. In fact, there is not one mention of drugs other than whiskey! After listening to Hamilton, I plan to listen to more hip hop. Currently, I’m getting into Death Grips!

Hamilton has not only changed my political point of view, it has made me more open-minded. It has gotten me out my comfort zone, especially with art. Each time I listen to Hamilton, I learn more about myself and how my upbringing has shaped me. I can’t wait to see how the next month of listening to Hamilton will change me.
