I got the bike for free so it’s not like I’m protecting an investment, but y’know I don’t wanna replace it, having it stolen would suck. They all seem hella expensive, I was thinking of just going to the hardware shop and buying a fucking big chain and padlock lol.

The metal U-Lock ones - with a chain or cable to put through your other wheel.

I was checking out some U-locks - is the price jump from $25 (Australian) to $100+ worth it with those things?

Most of having a bike lock is having a better one than the bike next to yours. So don't get a cheap wire one, or a thin chain or a combo lock. I have an Abus one which I like a lot, and has marks from when someone tried to cut through it with a pair of bolt cutters.

Yeh, I don’t think I’d be like, leaving it overnight or anything. Just while I went into the shop or something. Just something to keep it relatively safe for an hour or so max, probably during daylight too.

Chain and padlock is definitely the cheapest option, the local dollar store might even have one pre-wrapped and sold for bikes specifically so it won't scratch your frame. Mine does for ~$15.

They're harder than U-Locks to cut through anyway because they're hard to hold still for the angle grinder, just make sure you use one that's thick enough.

I use a motorcycle chain that I found abandoned and a truck padlock, never had a problem in 4 years. It's heavy though, at least 10lbs.

Also if I do go the chain route, what type of metal/thickness is decent enough to be a deterrent?

    Whichever one LockPickingLawyer can't open.

With a thick chain and shackle of course

Haha, I’ve wasted quite a few hours watching LPL, it’s what makes me so concerned about this topic. I find his videos oddly soothing.
