He was shot twice, and was quickly taken to his residence in the Kremlin, but was worried about getting attacked again, so he refused to go to a hospital to have the bullets removed. He seemed to recover quickly, but the attack and the bullets remaining in his body for so long seem to have majorly contributed to the health problems that lead to his relatively early death at 53
