The hatchet job Trueanon did in their episode on "can't get you out of my head" was really good and deserved since his last show was basically incoherent. Quite unfortunate because hypernormalization at least put forward a good idea that as society is unable to deal with its issues, there is a sense of nothing actually working and things basically falling apart with an overlying paralytic normality. I thought it was his best work tbh but maybe the topic lent itself more to his style (with the concept of hypernormalization being vague in the first place).
But I think you're probably right about why this show won't be good
Curtis anchors stories on a singular character that propels the narrative which isn't materialist nor is it good history. IMO some of his strongest series/films were All Watched Over By Machines Of Loving Grace from 2011 and Bitter Lake from 2015.
I watched like half of the first episode and got bored tbh. Without narration or music I don't really see the point, if I'm gonna be reading the whole time I'd rather just read a book on the subject and avoid his BBC lib biases. Also I recognized two reused clips from hypernormalization lol
I haven't watched it yet either, heard it described by someone who did enjoy it as it being like if the late soviet union had vine and twitter - just a jumble of images from the collapse of the ussr crossed with just daily life.
I like the concept of it. Just a silent, creepy documentary about people living their lives as it crumbles around them.
Sees this being described as "essential viewing" by the Guardian

Mostly kidding, I'll probably check it out although Curtis does have some brainworms as other comrades have pointed out in this thread.
