I make a point of telling a random American about this once a year. Their reaction to the information is a good test of their character.

In 1914 (all money was gold-backed then), United States Marines walked into Haiti's National Bank, crated up the gold, and within days it was inside a bank vault in NYC

I mean, Haiti is so miserably poor that even 21 billion over two centuries is enough for the population over those centuries to have thousands more in value, and more than double, of todays GDP per Capita.

Thats how much France and America fucked it over as a country, it is so poor.

According to John Brown’s reading of events, the Haitian Revolution showed that blood, not peace, broke the chains of slavery; only a Haitian-style rebellion could free American slaves and protect America from God’s wrath. From 1856 until his death in 1859, Brown’s behavior often reflected this belief, which significantly shortened the life of American slavery.

I actually did know about this, but I'm glad you reminded me, since it's hard to keep all this stuff in your head, and I did forget.

That's such a lib move on France's part: "Yes we are very sorry we did that but no we're not going to actually do anything to make amends, so fuck off".

And its' only 21 billion. That's chump change for a major country. They could pay them a billion a year for twenty years.
