I remember seeing someone posting a week or two ago about the zelda wiki being on fandom. Good news!

Hopefully Fandom dies a horrible, painful death. Absolute worthless company leeching off of the work of countless volunteers.

hopefully they bit off more than they can chew with the gamespot/gamepedia/tvguide/metacritic buying thing

It's a truly amazing grift. And it's a Jimmy Wales thing too, right?

In retrospect how fucking weird is it that despite wikipedia being the obvious model for all of them, all these other similar places are on this one weird website that has shitty functionality and tries to show you 10 ads a page

making a wikipedia-like site involves setting up MediaWiki, which isn't super difficult but does take some knowledge and time investment (and probably paying for a server). Fandom's main draw is convenience and SEO, so you can create a wiki for free in a few clicks and, if it has the canonical subdomain, it shows up at the top whenever someone searches for "X wiki"

If you have a small enough thing, you can use Amazon's free tier server. Main cost is media storage, the actual wiki part is pretty light.

You'd think someone would've undercut them by now. It's not that hard to make people wikis and pocket the ad revenue.

The Minecraft Wiki, Zelda Wiki, etc. were on Gamepedia, which did use MediaWiki and were really fantastic in that way, but as this post mentions, Gamepedia was bought by Fandom and Fandom foisted their awful layout on it.

Thank god Tolkien Gateway is independent. I really can't express how much a trap it is to tie your fandom to some for-profit leach.

Fandom dot com is the worst website, not just for its business practices, but just simply navigating it.

Have you seen breezewiki.com ? It lets you view stuff on Fandom without all the autoplaying crap

I was quite upset when Minecraft moved over to fandom. Happy to hear there are some big video game wikis resisting fandom.

edit: wait gamepedia was purchased by fandom? damn monopolies!!

Yep, it went independent Minecraft wiki (minecraftwiki.net) -> bought by Gamepedia (minecraft.gamepedia.com) -> bought by Fandom (minecraft.fandom.com).

It’s sucked to see wikis become unusable over the last few years. Even on a browser with Adblock every page will have an auto play video. Ten years ago I bought the wrong kind of phone which means I can never have mobile Adblock, and using a wiki site on it is an ordeal. Everything is choked with ads and the part that isn’t ads will be those autoplaying videos. It’s almost worse than sketchy porn sites at this point.

Autoplaying video ads are so so bad. Waste power, bandwidth, data plan usage, and screen space. Literally worse than a real life billboard, which only wastes space and paper.

iPhone? There are ad blocking apps. There's an open source one called AdGuard.

good fandom fucking sucks. back when it was wikia it still wasn't great but at least I could go on the minecraft wiki without being assaulted by autoplay video and suggested content

The Minecraft Wiki was on Gamepedia, not Wikia. Gamepedia was pretty good.

Great, but something's kind of annoying (in a pedantic sort of way) here.

It used to be Zeldapedia (Wikia -> Fandom) and Zelda Wiki (independent -> Gamepedia), they merged into Zelda Wiki (Fandom), but now they are splitting out Zeldapedia (independent).

So the new independent wiki is using the name of the old Wikia/Fandom wiki, while the Fandom wiki is using the name of the old independent wiki.
