Visibly adult-looking anime characters given front stage. Takes me back. :chomsky-yes-honey:

What? Is there something wrong with 10,000 year old dragons that look like 8 year olds? That not visibly adult enough for you?

What if she looked like she was 10, would that make it better?

You joke, but once I had a treat defender on Hexbear accuse me of wanting to mandate only dumpy middle aged people in anime.

I never made that demand, not even as a joke, but if I had to choose between that and the status quo of normalized cartoon child porn, I'd choose dumpy middle aged people cartoons without hesitation.

Why are Hexbearers complaining about this? I come here literally to talk to intelligent adults.

There's nothing wrong with dumpy middle aged people in anime; I'm tired of the trope of employed children and I miss the 90's anime that had actual adults in it. Everything today is about unemployed children or employed children. I want adults in my anime.

Most likely the reason the main characters are kids is because the main demographic are young people, and chances are in 10+ years anime will be about adults again because their demographic has aged. I'm looking forward to that period but it's really far away.

In Japan, anime is targeted at basically all age groups and lots of the child stuff is targeted at adult men and women.

In some subgenres that may be true, but the cynical :stonks-up: reason for the majority of the anime and manga industrial complex focusing on dubiously aged children is to sexually objectify them, either as an eternal tease or worse depending on the particular hog feed, mostly focused on appealing to aging creepy big spending otaku (and western weebs) that buy most of the merch.

it's all about the money. they want to go as extreme as possible to make sure the shitty people who are the only ones blowing millions of yen a year on figures buy from isekai harem shit #5 and not isekai harem shit #7.

the thing to feel hope about here is this is inherently unsustainable. there are only so many whales, and with more and more anime competing it's gotta crash at some point, especially with there being a hard ceiling for that sort of show that there isn't for anything with a hope of more mainstream success. chainsaw man may or may not take off in the west in a completely mainstream way, but it's actually possible for it to have a movie that makes 50 billion yen and have millions in worldwide merch in a way that fucking redo of healer will never be able to do.

basically my hope is that in a decade we'll be beyond this because it won't be profitable enough. this isn't to say anything like "it's ok to make borderline cp or rape apologia if it's purely mercenary" just my analysis as a weeb with too much time on her hands

also i typed all this on my phone twice because hexbear ate the first go

SDF Macross is the best since the aliens destroy most of the Earth in a cool scene

Macross Plus also rules I think I'll rewatch that soon

Every other Macross series is “pew pew lasers and missiles blow things up good!” while almost-certainly-exploited teenage girl peformers sing ultra-generic songs above love, which mysteriously make bad guys bad at fighting.

          DECULTURE!

Jokes aside, it's a goofy franchise. It has Wow, Cool Robot and J-pop, and you're kinda out of luck if you want much more than that.

Edit: Macross also has insufferable love triangles. That too.

The account is dedicated to 80s hair, but this specific tweet's text says early 90s. The screenshot's apparently from a '91 Gundam anime

I skipped around that link just for nostalgia, and somehow landed on the :awooga: moment during the credits.

Damn, even the fanservice back then was more wholesome.

Now: "Oh no the ego insert fell unconscious and is now the center of attention for a wish fulfillment harem!"

Then: "Hehe nudie centerfold go brrr."

I miss the days when anime protagonists were adults with jobs and who probably paid taxes, rather than 16 year olds with jobs.

Seriously, the trope of a child who's either so powerful and/or so wise that they're working for a governmental institution, or some kind of secret service is tired and not special anymore. I'm in my 30's, it's getting hard to talk about anime without feeling embarrassed and like I'm trying to upsell a child's cartoon, or some child's cartoon that's trying to be edgy by having the main character or people in it in general suffering or dying violently.

If you want the curliest, most voluminous hair put to anime, watch Hibike! Euphonium. (username relevant)

listen, i like hibike euphonium, but to claim it's the biggest compared to even just the example given here? not even a contender.

There's a japanese woman (well there are several really,) who works in payroll at the company I work for & she strait-up has like "Rumiko Takahashi Character" hair.

Like, the huge fringed bangs w/ a long flowing tail kind. I remember her wearing a pink pastel sweater & like a strawberry pattern dress, or something along with that.
