      AFAIK it's a very recently implemented feature and as I understand it it's derived from a Japanese script style convention for annotating text with different characters (I think? I'm just inferring from context here).

        In Japanese it's called furigana or yomigana, but it's also used for other ideographic/character based scripts where it's apparently called ルビ ruby characters fuck 12
