"They're kind of like our appendix. We've long evolved past their usefulness and there's a compelling case for their surgical removal."

No complaints here about the episode. Actually a solid anti-imperialist critique.

It's interesting to see what Marx talked about happen in real time. It's easy for a liberal (even if John Oliver tends to be slightly to the left of the hegemony, I'm also speaking of the entire machine that produces the show) to criticize the monarchy because their material interests are totally at odds. Capitalism supplanting feudalism, etc.

John Oliver, talking about a foreign country.

Oh man I sure hope he suggests we should maybe invade them :picard-excited:

Sounds like america needs to do a foreign intervention and do some regime change in the remote north Atlantic island ruled by the hereditary monarchy

State security forces have been arresting and charging protesters speaking out against the newly appointed dictator. Their people yearn for freedom!

He mentions in the video that he previously had some of an episode cut for the Sky broadcast because he made a joke about the monarchy. In this one he says that they've provided Sky with an alternate cut of the episode with all the monarchy bits taken out and that it's 25 minutes of Winston Churchill going down a waterslide to Yakety Sax.

Yeah I think the belief in its uselessness was a result of scientific ignorance (and/or arrogance). It's now believed that its function is related to the microbiome, I think.

It sure is refreshing to see him arrive at the conclusion that the system as a whole is an irredeemable monstrosity and should be abolished, instead of pointing out every single individual flaw in the system without ever putting them in the context of the system as a whole. The system in this case being feudal monarchy rather than capitalism of course, but it is still refreshing!

That's a bit harsh toward The Stressed Cockatoo Not Saying Capitalism for Half an Hour Show.
