If you liked Shin Gojira, be sure to check this one out too. Very similar but at the same time, very fresh. It's like Gojira meets X-Files meets Star Trek meets Evangelion. Absolute kino.
I was a little concerned when I saw that he'd fight four kaiju and aliens in the trailer, but I was actually pleasantly surprised by how well the movie flowed together.
My only complaint is that if they were going to use the Shin Gojira model for Gomess, they should have added Jirass too. I need to see that thing with a frill.
I haven't seen any modern Ultraman. I watched some early 2000's DVDs of Ultraman at my friends house one summer. I don't recall much of the story/characters, but I vividly remember enjoying it and having fun. I should give this a shot. Good find comrade.
Are you planning on checking out Shin Kamen Rider when it comes out next year?
Yes, absolutely. I'm actually not a fan of Kamen Rider at all (don't give a shit about motorbikes or 'heroes') but it's Hideaki Anno, Shingi Higuchi, and Shiro Sagisu, so how could I not watch? At least two members of that trio were involved in the Attack on Titan live-action movies, Shin Gojira, Shin Ultraman, and the 'God Warrior Appears over Tokyo' short film, all of which I deeply love.
Do you like monster movies? Because Shinji Higuchi was the SFX director for the Heisei Gamera trilogy, so you might want to check them out if you haven't.
Yes, I've got the trilogy on blu-ray. Great stuff. I was hoping the trio (Higuchi, Anno, Sagisu) would take make a 'Shin Gamera' next but it seems like Kadokawa is moving forward with some garbage anime Gamera movie so whatever. I recall Higuchi said in an interview that he considers the Gamera trilogy as his 'Shin Gamera' but obviously it's very different to Shin Gojira/Ultraman stylistically.
Honestly, with the type of 'back to basics' approach of the Shin movies, and how corny the original Gamera movies were, I'd be wary a Shin Gamera. Plus, if they went with the friend to all children approach, I feel like it would just be a retread of both Shin Gojira and Ultraman.
But maybe I'm just nitpicking, and I'd be down for a new live action Gamera movie with modern filmmaking techniques.
