“We thank the quick reactions of heroic customers that subdued the gunman and ended this hate attack,” the statement said. Details of how the shooting ended have yet to be released by police, but Castro said “this was not an officer-involved shooting.”

Colorado Springs is a major hotbed of evangelicals. It's bad to the point that the Air Force Academy based there has the reputation of being infiltrated, with them going on to proselytise in the military. There is also a large atomwaffen contingent and it's surrounded by diseased ranchers. An absolute blight on the world that should be quarantined for the rest of our protection. Not at all surprised this happened.

This is correct. When evangelicals were kicked out of academia and "reasonable" bourgeois politics abandoned their influence post-moral majority (for a time), the evangelical leaders abandoned the traditional American seats of power (DC, NYC) and retreated from society to form their own. Colorado Springs became their largest hub with focus on the family and other dumbfucks.

Unfortunately, I agree. One of the subcultures I run in has a proportionally small, but equally reactionary subset of people and they tend to all be concentrated in Colorado.

It's only going to get worse. So much of the land distribution was concentrated in big agribusiness and other resource extractors. Material conditions are only going to further degrade for both. The drought will mean their water will be cut by the state, the Rockies trapping air will eventually mean a crackdown on oil and coal, fracking is already barred from most of the growing developments. All of the underfunded mountain and plains towns were driven to right-wing Christianity as the only local support network. We're the migration point for the future wave of Texan refugees fleeing climate change so that will only grow and concentrate more wealth in the churches. Same with Utah and the Great Salt Lake becoming a toxic dust storm.

I don't know how much worse it's gotten but for more information on this I recommend the documentary Constantine's Sword
