I wanted to punch Algus so bad. Guy was just a superb classist prick.
Honestly wish they would've returned to doing stories that included the kind of nuance/class warfare that FF Tactics had but I don't think the people writing these games in the PS1 era continued to really have much influence (xenogears was a particularly fun one).
Hey look it's my favorite FF game. Class war plays such a huge part in the first chapter. Amazing game but the story does get a little wacky/took too much inspiration from Berserk later on.
I feel like it just kinda goes in the same trajectory that a lot of jrpgs go. I agree that by the last chapter it completely drops all these other interesting plot points, but I can't blame them for devolving it into you v Satan (but also kinda Jesus? Lol) when dealing with the more nuanced stuff wouldve been a lot more work... And a lot more risky. Still miles better than most FF plots
Yeah like every dialogue you have with the Corpse Brigade before you defeat them has the player going "Yeah hmm they're kinda cooking Ramza you are a spoiled blue blooded punk that serves the interest of the ruling class at the expense of the common folk you rob but call thieves".
But of course, the revolutionary forces are colluding with the temple knights who are secretly colluding with and/or are actual literal demons so they have to die to protect the royal families!!! We have to grease the economy with peasant blood or else everyone and everything will die!
It's a very typical story dynamic from libs. Just have to create some reason why any sort of class revolt is actually bad, despite good intentions. In this case, as is often done, it's by making the leaders of the class revolt seem corrupted.
I wish Yasumi Matsuno directed/wrote more games, but I think he got pretty ill around FF12 and never quite did any more high profile stuff (Crimson Shroud was p cool, though).
Can't say I liked 12 (I felt like the plot left a lot of unresolved stuff, and didn't really lean into the imperialism bit in a way that made out the empire to be as bad as it could've). Vagrant story was obviously good, but its not surprising that we don't get weird stuff that goes off the path as much. Its sad that AAA devs are largely pigeonholing themselves into safety because of development time. It says a lot that the wildest thing thats happened in the FF franchise in years is characters explicitly having sex.

idk, how explicit do you need it? Because it's definitely been strongly implied in such a way that it may as well be explicit. Like Tidus and Yuna in the Macalania Woods or whatever in FFX
Uh no that was just kissy huggy wet fun don't be GROSS
Gaia and Ryne (and also Sadu and Cirina) in FFXIV are incredibly obviously a lesbian couple but they won't come out and say it.

Which game was this? I totally missed it lol
It's largely not worth buying, honestly. I enjoyed FF16 but partly because it doesn't try being something more grand than just a spammy action RPG. The plot is simple, and as such it doesn't fall into the weird pitfalls of being convoluted but is also nothing to write home about

Sounds like something I'd impulse buy for $10 in 5 years and play like 15 hours of lol
Yeah honestly thats a good way to look at it. I thought it was better than 13/15 but not enough to justify a premium
Tactics is my favorite game because of shit like this. Love it. REMAKE WHEN
If there is one it'll be a lazy port of the PSP War of the Lions, the same way Tactics Ogre Reborn was
Tactics Ogre is by the same devs, is it this based too? I also wonder about FFT Advance and A2...
Also "Animals have no god!" always made me giggle, very unserious guy.
