What's the fucking point? I can't imagine anything more boring even if it worked. Racing is fun bc of the drama and courage. I guess this is cool as a novelty

Yeah, I've talked to some engineering grad bros who wish the pure machines didn't require stupid drivers, and could be taken to their logical limits by removing the human element.

But all the compelling drama is from the drivers. Tech bros don't understand anything but shiny toys

And now every car takes the exact same optimized line every lap and the only difference is who's car has better specs which will be apparent after 1 race.

Not that that's any more or less boring than how the actual F1 season is going where it was apparent who was going to win 2 laps into the first race but still.

Seriously, most teenagers take about 5 minutes to figure out that having two computer teams play each other in a video game is boring who thought this was a good idea.

I mean I know obviously it's motor racing so the people making tens of millions of dollars are the one who thought it was a good idea but still.

There's chess computer tournaments. They're relatively niche but in those cases it's effectively a competition of "who can build the smartest chess AI". There's still a human element to it.

With physical car races, the audience would most definitely too small to justify the costs. But I can see "who can build the best autonomous racing car with the best racing AI" be entertaining to some nerds.

At the end of the day the problem to overc9me in chess is the opponent. Your strategy has to change to reflect theirs. There isn't a "best" set of moves that works in every scenario.

A racetrack is a solved problem, there's an optimal line through every turn and it's not like the turns are changing lap to lap.

It would literally just come down to pit stop strategy because once you get a car in front you just hit the "fastest optimal lap" button and unless another car has a mechanical advantage (intentionally minimized in most leagues) there isn't really anything the people behind can do other than hope for a mechanical failure.

Although again I'm still basically just describing max verstappen.

When it came time for the actual race, the lead racer, Polimove, spun out on the fourth of eight laps. The second car, Tum, passed it safely, but shortly after that, the event’s officials threw up a yellow flag. And since these are good AI drivers who obey the rules, the two behind Polimove stopped, unwilling to pass the spun-out yellow car. Racers aren’t supposed to pass each other during a caution lap, you see.

The AI can't even determine when a car is out of the race lol

why dont they drop an F1 video game opponent AI in there instead of using chatgpt or whatever

The video game opponent ai doesn't actually need to know how to operate a car or perceive the real world

nerd Well, actually, they're not F1 cars, they're Dallara SF23 chassis, AKA the car used by Super Formula.

Seriously though, bazingas think we're getting self-driving cars any time in the near future when they can't even drive a closed circuit, lol.
