I think this is non-war deaths, the Jakarta Method is about mass extermination programs more than the consequences of war, so Korea is probably all the shit the South did prior to the war (Jeju Island stuff for example).

Even with non-war deaths there's a lot of anticommunist assassinations in the imperial core across this same time period too that are missing.

Go back a few years and you can add like 30 million people from Eastern Europe alone

There are thousands of extrajudicial assassinations in the imperial core that could be on a map like this for the same period.

Y'all should read The Jakarta Method if you get a chance, easy read, only kind of lib, but good info and a generally very good lens.

That being said, the data from this map (cribbed directly from the text) isn't really a standalone own that the tweeter implies. This is for several reasons:

    a) even when taken in total they do not approach the commonly believed numbers of Victims of Communism, so as a rhetorical device this is kind of useless and only resonates with people who already share our perspective

    b) as mentioned elsewhere in this thread, this is not a map showing the total victims of anticommunism, nor is it really intended to. Not only does it not count war deaths, but much more importantly it doesn't count all the people who starved to death, or died of exposure, or a treatable disease because the economic systems that anticommunism establishes doesn't guarantee food, housing or medicine to the poor. These are the bulk of the types of deaths the Victims of Communism people use to pump their numbers.

In context in the book this map is great and useful, out of context it ironically carries water for the anticommunists because it makes it seem like they were orders of magnitude less lethal and destructive than they really were.

Yeah we gotta get these rookie numbers up. Need a black book of capitalism cover all the developmental deaths, industrial disasters, all economic depressions, but also conflicts and things like the Bengal famine, Chinese civil war casualties, Pol Pot in kambuchea (who renounced Marxism in 82 and was supported by China and the US and Thailand against Vietnam), all the third world proxy wars and their victims through the drug wars and war on terror; are all the kinds of disasters that get tallied against communism.

I close my eyes after glancing at this graph, and hear an imaginary guy yelling "gotta pump those numbers up" at this graph:

it's some guy screaming 'better dead than red'.
