... What you’re referring to as chapo.chat, is in fact, Lemmy/chapo.chat, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, Lemmy plus chapo.chat. chapo.chat is not an link aggregator unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning shitposting system made useful by the Lemmy corelibs, post utilities and vital system components comprising a full link aggregator as defined by POSTIX.

Many instances run a modified version of the Lemmy system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of Lemmy which is widely used today is often called “chapo.chat”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the Lemmy system, developed by the Lemmy Project.

There really is a chapo.chat, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Lemmy is the backend: the program in the system that allocates the forum’s post to the other instances that you run. The instance is an essential part of an link aggregator, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete federation. chapo.chat is normally used in combination with the Lemmy link aggregation system: the whole system is basically Lemmy with chapo.chat added, or Lemmy/chapo.chat. All the so-called "chapo.chat" instances are really instances of Lemmy/chapo.chat.
