I mean the old Peter O Toole/Orson Welles bit about Shakespeare playing the ghost rings true. The great artists know not to take the lead role but instead some role that sells the illusion/sets the stage for the lead.

Immature artists like Roliand and Lin Manuel cast themselves as leads since they can't imagine receding into the background (as great authors and artists do).

I mean negative capability exists (i.e. we can always read "against" Rick or these other self inserts since there are other characters).

But the degree of self inserts just makes that so hard. Susan Sarandon as the therapist is right, but the show keeps screaming Pickle Rick....

The show never really read against him in the first place. Despite all the opposition Rick gets, his philosophy and viewpoint always turn out to be right in the end.

The closest they get is showing Rick as sad but even then it plays into the self-felating "tragic smart guy" who isn't understood by the sheeple around him.

Yeah again, it's immature art, since the mature artist isn't concerned with making sure people read things exactly right (think of Verhoeven GOD and chuds reading Starship Troopers as rah rah - granted in that case they're telling on themselves a bit..)
