For evangelical Christians (which make up a large # of transphobes), they simply believe no one is actually trans and that gender dysphoria isn't "real". Not unlike how they think being gay isn't "real" - and how by the power of Jesus you can overcome those "urges". Though in recent years there's been a number of evangelicals who will concede maybe you might have a same-sex inclination but it's a sin to act on it.

they don't view trans-ing children as a step to abuse, they view it as abuse in itself. to them, violating gender law is a sexual act.
