Long answer horror has always evoked punishment for or relishing in sublimated cultural taboos. Often there has to be a breaking of a pillar, a sin, by the characters that earns their suffering. Or at least thrusts them into the conflict.
Without any sort of original sin, movies tend to fall into the “feel bad” realm where bad shit is happening because… bad shit happens.
The interesting case is when you look at international horror. The punishment is always similar, fear and violence, but the cause varies by regional, cultural and historical backgrounds.
