And the self identification is important, because tons of people vote for R and D but have very little attachment to either, these people are very reachable; hell i vote for democrats and i hate the democratic party, but atleast they arent calling for my extermination. If someone has invested enough psychic energy, or directly benefits materially from, self conscious identification with one of the parties the only way to really get to them is if they have some kind of crisis or break that leaves them open to propaganda.
