I loved this movie. I especially liked the theme of "is it better to be kind or to be remembered by history?" I think most people lean towards kindness but then when you think about things like communist revolution, or even just any protesting, you engage in things that may not be considered "kind" in an interpersonal sense, even if it is something that saves more suffering in the longer term.
I also enjoyed the male relationship dynamics. the cinematography. and many other parts of the plot and themes that all swirl together in such a simple story. some good ole irish anti-police sentiment. etc.

I really like the fact that Colm's music probably won't be remembered in fifty years but the story of the guy who chopped all his fucking fingers off out of spite will be passed down for generations.
The dialectical answer to the theme is of course its better to be remembered by history for your kindness: there's a reason the camera focuses so much on Jesus when he's in the background. The kind Vladimir Illyich also fits this description. Loved the movie as well, and I enjoyed that the ending didn't just go "and they're all well again."
Agreed, and I feel like Banshees is Martin McDonagh perfecting what he started in In Bruges where he critiques toxic masculinity by taking its values and codes and applying them to increasingly high stakes to really demonstrate their destructive nature.
An older suburban guy told me he thought it was too dark and to see the fabelmans instead. Best recommendation to see banshees I could’ve gotten. Loved it. I give it five bags of popcorn, two cokes, and a little finger keychain.
