The US is a developing country. It's never been a developed country. There are city-states that can be considered developed but stray too far outside of the city limits and it's indistinguishable from peasant villages in [insert any African country regularly used as an example of extreme poverty]. We've got the trucks with guns in them (not quite to technicals yet), there are militias "defending" from the "enemy", extreme state sanctioned violence, and so on. And there is no chance it gets any better without revolution.
