I've heard that Br*tish feminism never had anything like the Combahee River Collective to drag the middle/upper income "middle class" movement back down to the trenches with the working class and force them to understand intersectionality, so it stayed primarily a movement of middle class cis women. As a result they never had a reckoning about transgender people like 2nd wave feminism did back in the 70s and that's why there's such an entrenched TERF faction.
That's not entirely true, there was a very strong Working Class and even minority movement in the 1st wave, strongly connected with Socialists, but it was stamped out, hard and violently. And the middle class women became the face of the movement.
I didn't know that. I know a bit about the 1st wave, but it's mostly just action movie stuff about the Pankhurst sisters beating the shit out of cops then tragically choosing socialism, liberalism, and fascism respectively. Can you suggest any good reading on the suppression of the working class part of the movement?
My favourite is Anna Clarke's work, though she spends a lot more time on the Chartists.
Thanks!
