That's beyond treat defence though.
Sports fans fighting each other is due to deep rivalries with history behind it that often go way beyond just kicking a ball around. Stuff like Barcelona and Catalan independence, Lazio and fascism, Rangers and being British unionists, etc. All of this is still horrific behaviour and part of why I don't enjoy going to stadiums or fan events, I remember having to hide my team's scarf as a kid after we won the local derby. I also don't have the money in the first place.
When a country hosts a sporting event, it's to show that they're open for business to the "international community", consequences be damned. Think Germany 2006 after German reunification, Beijing 2008 to put China out there as a superpower, South Africa 2010 after the end of apartheid 16 years after the end of apartheid. It's all a political stunt.
I think all that is different to some culture warrior buying 10 copies of the Harry Potter game or crying about the last of us TV series. Thats what I meant by treat defence. With sports, treat defence to me would be something like defending legal reckless play because it's entertainment. Like arguing for players to be less protected in football. Or wanting more crashes in racecar events.
Okay that's a good example of the treat defenders doing real world harm, that definitely sucks.
