Nine out of ten Parisians have voted in favor of banning rental electric scooters from the city’s streets. Once seen as a pioneering form of green transport, the vehicles rapidly became a scourge as users flouted traffic laws and caused crashes and injuries.

Voters chose to ban the scooters by 89% to 10% in a “public consultation” on Sunday organized by Mayor Anne Hidalgo. Though the vote was non-binding, Hidalgo has vowed to implement the ban from September onwards.

The measure covers scooters rented to tourists and visitors by companies such as Lime, Dott, and Tier. These three firms own nearly 15,000 e-scooters, which users book via smartphone apps. The ban will not affect privately-owned scooters

One of the commenters is right, how much did Uber or some car-related company pour into passing this? The article seems to suggest a lot of the crashes were actually car-related (although maybe the scooter rider was making some dodgy moves).

    They’re right, those things suck.

Lime rentals just end up being left in ditches and the people renting them never follow any traffic norms. Not even laws. Just norms.

Get your own e-scooter, dont line the pockets of some uber competitor

Unsurprisingly, Uber owns a significant portion of Lime. You can requisition Lime scooters and bikes through Uber's app.

It’s literally impossible to ride an e-scooter and not look like a dork, doesn’t help that most people who ride one are millennials in business casual. Get a cruiser skateboard or just an e bike nerds

Edit: I know they're more expensive, but a city with e bikes to rent everywhere would be amazing

The ideal is ebike rental that's free for the first hour or something, that you have to leave at a dock.

Rental scooters are a menace, way more people cycle here yet the ratio of assholes with no respect is way higher for scooter shitheads than cyclists.

Using them in Oslo was a joy. First time is ever used them. They have huge bike lanes and quiet roads anyway. Honestly it seemed like a really cool system.

if people would keep them on the streets, sure, but one of the biggest problems with these scooters is people think they can drive them on the sidewalk and a lot of people who rent them are thinking of them as a fun thing to do (fair enough) so they aren't really paying attention where they're going. i live in an area where these were recently introduced and it's such a nuisance.

Good. Those rental scooters are some of the worst litter, blocking sidewalks for wheelchairs and strollers.

Excellent. Glad to see these scooter companies see some consequences
