As someone who started transition and was having a lot of fears of passing when BotW came out, fuck that gerudo section. Characters constantly questioning Link or saying they can tell, constant jokes about telling someone's actually a man under the clothes or faking it.

That shit wasn't progressive, it was a mockery, and a huge part of the reason I never went back until 6 years later when there were mods to fix it

Yeah that section kind of sucked a lot. It just made me start to think, like, would they throw out masculine women just as quick? How exactly are they so certain noted androgynous elf boy Link is actually a guy?

Even when you get past the guards, the vibe is that everyone knows you're not supposed to be there but no one really cares enough to call the guards. They just think it's funny.

Yeah, that whole section had a "Dare you enter my magical realm?" feel to it.

Mario 2's manual had a picture labeled "Birdo", and then in the description mentioned "He'd prefer to be called Birdette though".

Fuckin...I've been deadnaming Birdetta this whole time!?! Why did nobody tell me I was complicit in Birdetta erasure?!?! Why is nobody talking about Birdetta erasure?!?

Refusing to play anything but Turbo Graphix 16 because I'm pretty sure nobody knows enough about that console to call me on my contrary politics.

these baby contrarians have no politics of their own and I guarantee they would be singing a different tune if critics had received the mario movie with praise, and in fact, they were already bracing for an anti-mario movie campaign because of peach lol

You know, it's kinda impressive how cool/progressive Japanese media can be in some cases while being the exact opposite in others. Like, the mental whiplash is almost worse than that of American media in some cases. If you were to play FF7 Remake or watch HunterxHunter, you'd see characters in them that are, while not the best, decent representation for people who are usually under represented. The treatment of Killua's sister, who was amab if I understand correctly, is pretty good as shes never called anything other than her or she, iirc: the Zoldic family situation is still terrible, tho, they're monsters. The treatment of the crossdressing segment in the FF7 Remake is VASTLY better than in the original, and the way they treated characters with none traditional... cosmetics? Aesthetics? The none heteronormative actions and appearances of the honey bee man and the pretty bodybuilder guy, is what I'm trying to say. But then you have something like Persona 5, which has a pretty terrible running gag involving two overly campy, stereotypical gay men, which, if the joke absolutely had to be in there, could have been replaced with a pair of golden girls-esque older women and probably worked better and less offensively. If the joke HAD to be in there.

It's almost as if 100 million Japanese people have different opinions and preferences and create media that reflects those differences.

Well, yeah I get that. But imo it feels like it works more there than in america. Like despite all the claims of "woke" media being a money pit, those movies are still making 10x the profit of "anti-woke" movies like that gina carrano film, even their worst productions make more than films like that one. But with japanese media, there's success for both types, likely among the same people. Maybe im over simplifying it, but i just thought it was an interesting (if flawed) observation on my part.

Re: Alluka from HunterXHunter, Killua always uses she/her pronouns when talkling to her but the rest of the family misgenders her constantly.

Thank you, it's been some time since I watched it to the end, so I'd forgotten her name. But the fact they misgender her does show they're still an awful family. That and the torture, that's pretty bad, too.

Staying out of cultural issues by literally censoring any religious imagery for years in a non-political manner.

Splitting hairs here, but I think censoring religious imagery was coming from Nintendo of America rather than the Japanese HQ. I'm sure there's plenty on all ends to make reactionary:gamer-gulag:s upset regardless. :shrug-outta-hecks:

Technically mario being a proletarian hero and getting a bite of peaches cake is the perfect encapsulation of the weird kidn a marxist liberalism the Japanese are fond of.

If these dipshits were around in 2005, they would be seething about Nintendo going "woke" with Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance shoe-horning in critical race theory or some shit.
