33 million dollars for a major construction project really isn't all that much.

    The projects are here

    https://www.transportation.gov/briefing-room/biden-harris-administration-announces-nearly-300-million-9-bridge-projects-part

It's 9 projects with like 20 bridges included. A majority of these projects are replacing bridges, not repairing so it's not really that crazy

Oh yeah, my city is getting one of these. For our case, they're replacing it before it gets too old and dangerous for once.

1 in 3 U.S. Bridges Needs Repair or Replacement...

The estimated cost to replace all the structurally deficient bridges based on average price data from the U.S. DOT is over $54 billion.

Also being "critical bridges" here means there's gonna be a lot of expensive and time consuming work making sure that they're still functioning even as the work is done.

That's clearly just the first estimate. I bet the final cost is x3. Maybe even a lot more.

The SF Bay Bridge was a 2,500% budget overrun: from $250M to $6.5B.

    San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge

During the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, a portion of the eastern section's upper deck collapsed onto the lower deck and the bridge was closed for a month. Reconstruction of the eastern section of the bridge as a causeway connected to a self-anchored suspension bridge began in 2002; the new eastern section opened September 2, 2013, at a reported cost of over $6.5 billion; the original estimate of $250 million was for a seismic retrofit of the existing span.

Comes out to ~$33 million per bridge. My cynical guts say that's not enough to do routine maintenance on a good bridge, let alone something in "critical" condition
