It makes sense, darker than anglos often and speak the same language as people from south America, which is not white. Past that, perhaps more importantly, there were never that many people directly immigrated from Spain to America. The ones that did probably had money, so didn't face much discrimination. When the time came for more euros to become white so black factory workers couldn't unionize, they didn't make you a large enough demographic that they made sense to prop up. It was easier to put the poor ones in the same conditions as black people, or Latin American people moving north

In Europe someone from south America would be white. Also it's not darkness of skin or Italians wouldn't be white
Huh, I didn't know that. Here in the states they are definitely not. And although it's not just skin color, that's irrefutably part of it.
