the unrealistic sweetness and kindness of all of those downtrodden white folk. I've never been around people who act like that

I had opinions kinda like this when I was a no-class-understanding-having-ass teen living in "the south." The quotes are there because while I was indeed within the borders of an impoverished red state, I was technically living in the wealthier liberal bastion at the center. Southerners were, from my perspective, all suburban HVAC guys and their insufferable wives whose "southern hospitality" was to glare at me across the rooms of their McMansions when they discovered I didn't go to church.

Sad that this woman made it to adulthood still holding onto a child's understanding of these things

It's not even Steinbeck's best novel, nor it is his most preachy Lmao. This is surface-level understanding of literature because it feels like this person has never read anything with more depth than an airport book

Lmao goddamn. Yes, Anna, it's called propaganda. It just seems egregious because it's not the propaganda you're used to.

She prefers nonpolitical propaganda where the bad guys want to improve society somewhat but go too far and have to be put back in their place by Great Men that were born special. :so-true:

this is a story that squeezes sympathy from us drop by drop, like whey from a cheese

    How dare they! :wojak-nooo:

The only thing a story should squeeze out is endless spectacle misery in a way that makes the reader enjoy their relatively comfortable position while watching, like an episode of COPS. :so-true:

we are also being lectured to and preached to

Considering how often burgerbrains completely fucking miss any intended point of, say, the Starship Troopers movie or Breaking Bad, maybe burgerbrains ought to be lectured and preached to somewhat. :debord-tired:

This asshole should be thankful they’re not being lectured and preached to in a reeducation camp

I used to wonder why reeducation and gulags for that matter were a thing in the Soviet Union. :thinkin-lenin:
