It was an inside job, even at generous speeds an asteroid launched from the Klendathu system would take around 100,00 years to traverse the galaxy before smashing into Buenos Aries.
It's implied that the bugs have some kind of FTL method, considering they appear to be winning on all fronts. I personally like the idea that the attack was real but the Bugs were provoked into the war better than the idea that it's a false flag.
Envisioning a giant space bug that shits asteroids out of it's doodoo ass.
They probably have FTL travel -- bugs did live on different planets
