Annual inspections are a cash grab for small business tyrants and I'm surprised they let this pass.

Surely $7.50 is the fee paid to the state and not the total cost paid to a mechanic.

I'm guessing that the states normally pay mechanics for the emissions tests on the back end.

I think it's different per state, in mine you just go get the emissions test. The funding might come indirectly from registration fees but i do not give the mechanic any money at all

I think I had to pay like 100$ last year. I should figure out if that's a yearly thing. Its such a weird idea. "Hey, you know how not owning a car leads to inevitable social death? Yeah, if your car isn't expensive enough and you don't keep up with the expensive maintenance we'll make it a crime for you to engage in basic survival."

My state doesn't have emissions standards, which is ridiculous, BUT it was kind of nice when my catalytic converter was stolen...

I was 37 the first time I lived somewhere that had mandatory emissions inspections. I think the states I lived in previously waved them if your car was newer than a certain date. I always thought they were a fucked up kind of poor tax. "What's that peasant? The car you need to survive in our car centric wage labor society is old and busted? Fuck you, your car is not verbotten, but we're also not going to provide a working public transit system".
