Or is it just going to be like the site name where mods just do it without asking anyone?
(Maybe it's clear by the question but I also don't really understand how all this works)

What podcast? The old name referred to the subreddit that became a notorious boogieman of libs to the point where my NYT-reading lib friends would mald about it. Basically nobody outside the left even knows what that podcast is.
The actual CTH podcast held like the second position on Patreon's most grossing podcasts for a few years.
The old sub, being a sub intended for the podcast, did take on a life of its own but I think its reasonable to separate from from the podcast after this many degrees of separation. At this point, hexbear is a VERY different zone than the old CTH sub. Part of the sub's culture was the stupid reach it had, like you mention. It was basically a sub that existed to cause trouble. Hexbear still has the energy of people who like to cause trouble but fairly far removed from the most sick of sickos that would really run the brigading.
I like that Hexbear has the lore attached to /r/cth, but that it evolved into it's own thing. It's a lot more caring and sympathetic than the sub and I think that's alright.
The discord Diaspora has been hanging on the fat spyro joke for a while now.
Overall I think the actual "Chapo Trap House" name is a bit tacky, Felix went on a podcast a couple years ago that was a black culture type leftist podcast and the host dug into him for the name and he really didn't get it.
I don't know if my bit of 'tism has me totally misunderstanding you, tbf.
My point was that we didn't name ourselves after a podcast, we named ourselves after the sub that struck fear into the hearts of libs.
The fact that the podcast has a lot of Patreon subs is kind of unrelated to what I said, which is that outside of the left basically nobody has heard of it. Actual big podcasts don't have Patreon accounts they just do ads.
Personally I rather this site have it's own identity not centered on the fact there was once a subreddit that would bully other redditors.
IMO it feels sorta pathetic I guess? We built a community here that is more or less distinct from the sub, and still manages to strike fear into lemmy libs on beehive somehow, despite being an extremely positive place.
Everything is transient, nothing stays the same.
Additionally, the context of that podcast that felix was on, the host was roasting him essentially because to people like him, it seemed like a goofy white boy fronting on the very serious reputation of the real El Chapo. He tried to explain that anyone else trying to do this would probably get jumped at the very least. To this guy the name "Chapo Trap House" felt like a bunch of well off white dudes doing a bit that they didn't understand. I tend to agree. Thinking about it too hard feels like I'm back in college and 5 white boys are standing in a circle rapping along to "real slim shady".
Yeah I guess my point is I'd be fine if I was outnumbered in opinion on the name change, I just don't like that we were never asked what we thought the mods just did it.
And tbf I think discourse about the podcasts name is dumb af. It's clearly supposed to be ironic. Like holy shit who cares go do some praxis.
Nah the name change was bad and and jumping over to the low tier evanescent meme that was the hexagonal bear as a permanent name has shades of "so random" written all over it.
Do you remember what pod Felix was on? That sounds pretty funny.
I forget the name, I listened to it because there was this person on twitter, DahliaStKnives, who would cohost. The other host did the roasting but she was pumped to interview felix. She's now like some kind of tradcath conservative that allows her to be trans or w/e and has changed her name a few times and I think deleted her account.
What I'm trying to say is, I'm equipped as you are to find this. I think the podcast had a name like "ghetto news network" but searching it isn't coming up with anything. I think it may all be nuked.
edit: this is the only evidence I've found from it https://twitter.com/Sandernista412/status/1256450208323514368?s=20
