As someone who has very little stake in this fight I think it's very funny how the mods have built up a lot of resentment over this (from the posters as a whole). And it's deserved to some extent - they exhibit a large amount of power over their userbase with basically zero accountability. As someone who basically only uses reddit for sports gossip and updates it was very annoying seeing the nba and soccer sub close some of the most important days of the year as they are by far the best way to keep updated.
But yeah - having a dozen or so unelected people be able to shut down social pages that millions of people browse seems like a major oversight on the part of the admins and if it wasn't, you know, Reddit I think changes would be due because of this.
Also I don't give a flying fuck about mods losing their precious API tools or whatever. Their job should be to remove spam and ban rulebreakers. The stuff they use now is way over the top and definitely doesn't need to exist - advanced shadowbanning, manipulating the algorithm to boost stuff, using bots to mark users who post in entirely different subs, etc

All of these things have been absolutely essential to leftist subreddits and efforts to move userbases leftwards.
Not to mention protecting of marginalised groups. Like yes it is absolutely suitable for /r/gamingcirclejerk to pre-ban everyone from fascist subreddits. Nothing of value is to be gained from having them participate.
Even in sports subreddits there's a case for using those features to fuck off the terfs brigade subreddits by pre-emptively shadowbanning them so they can't spread their vile shit every time a trans person comes 3rd in some event.

This is almost impossible without the tools though. Have you seen how the new Reddit website and app looks? If you want to keep using Reddit, curating and moderating a large community using only the Reddit official app.
Shadow bans and algorithm stuff is done by Reddit admins and Reddit tools, not moderators. If a moderator touches that stuff they get removed (see the moderator of presidential race memes, even some Chapo trap house mods). Bots to mark users is the only thing you listed that mods are allowed to do. Even then it's controversial.
Giving Reddit admins full control and eliminating mods is how Reddit becomes Facebook or Twitter. And I don't even like Reddit mods either. Most of them are annoying stcuk up arseholes.

oh no i'm so bad for knowing things! not having knowledge on a topic shouldn't be a barrier to going off

The day that old. is shut down is the day that reddit sees a real exodus.
