They’re mad that you don’t have to write a tabletop character backstory to register at those instances.

so lemmy.world and sh.itjust.works won't be able to view or comment in beehaw communities, beehaw users wont be able to view or comment in their communities either, however on a 3rd instance that all 3 federate with, lemmy.world and shi.itjust.works users would be able to see beehaw users' comments, but beehaw users won't see theirs

well it seems much more likely that people will defederate with us instead of the other way round, so this may work out in our favor.

Yeah lol anytime someone from Hexbear gets a top comment that pulls the discussion in a certain direction, the discussion literally just disappears for all the users of the stupid websites. That's amazing

Like oh my god, if there is a good comment by a Beehaw user as the 5th comment, you could literally just paraphrase it as a reply to the top comment and get people to reply there lol, and noone will respond to the Beehaw comment :michael-laugh:

It's a little strange and frustrating yeah, I have to check other people's instances quite often if I don't already recognize it to make sure lemmygrad isn't blocked

This will probably be changed down the line, all it does currently is take you out of the conversation. If we can still reply to beehaw comments on lemmy.ml for example, then we can argue against them but they can't reply. Lemmy.ml though will still see our arguments.

what about instances that beehaw has defederated from pre-emptively, without that instance ever being federated with beehaw, like a certain hex bear dot net? Does that mean they wouldn't see our posts on, say lemmy.ml if we'd federate with them, but we would see theirs?

That sounds incredibly confusing. Add another to the pile of reasons I'm skeptical of federation.

It really won’t matter for hexbear at first, it’ll only be federated with lemmygrad

Hopefully we get the ability to personally block communities and instances before we federate with any other instance.

You can block communities on upstream lemmy, and I do think there are plans to let users block instances themselves eventually
