They’re mad that you don’t have to write a tabletop character backstory to register at those instances.

I hope they defederate from lemmy.ml so i wont see beehaw posts there

Beehaw wants to become the defacto face of lemmy and this is just a move to gain users on their instance.

but they're literally siloing themselves off from everyone else right at the point of a popularity boom - causing one crowd to whine about freeze peach, and another to silently realise that they had a user experience that just got worse

like, at least we had a reason to be separated from lemmy; the dev was too slow

if they didn't want to share a user base with tankies, maybe they shouldn't have used the service made by tankies?

It's kind of awesome how big lemmy has become given our proximity to the developers. Especially given r/chapotraphouse getting banned and libs lying their asses off about it on reddit, and now there's tons of people coming to lemmy, which Hexbear developers have now backmerged a bunch of contributions to.

lol unfortunately for them we can still get in through lemmy.ml (or wherever they still fed with), and we will go through that level of effort to make more accounts

I can't read the announcement because they block good proxies and I'm too busy to workaround.

There was an issue on Lemmy in previous years where instances that were fast and easy to join were systematically abused by some obsessed rightoid to make shock-posting troll accounts, so basically any instance without user approval was defederated from the core bunch.

But that was then and this is dumb. There are now many thousands of users from a temporary reddit crisis. You need an easy sign up process if you want to be a general-purpose instance.

To be fair, it seems like defederating from everyone is their only option at this point. It looks like they want to be SomethingAwful-esque and that just isn't possible when any redditor can wander in and call you a lib. IDK what the appeal of Beehaw is or why they decided to use Lemmy though.

I can see the appeal if you're a lib or consider yourself a bit left and you want sort of a safe space / echo chamber. Except for all their substack newsletter tier posts and reminders of that, they're really not lol

10k users? Is that real or does this group just really like pumping numbers up to 10k when information is sketchy?

so lemmy.world and sh.itjust.works won't be able to view or comment in beehaw communities, beehaw users wont be able to view or comment in their communities either, however on a 3rd instance that all 3 federate with, lemmy.world and shi.itjust.works users would be able to see beehaw users' comments, but beehaw users won't see theirs

well it seems much more likely that people will defederate with us instead of the other way round, so this may work out in our favor.

Yeah lol anytime someone from Hexbear gets a top comment that pulls the discussion in a certain direction, the discussion literally just disappears for all the users of the stupid websites. That's amazing

Like oh my god, if there is a good comment by a Beehaw user as the 5th comment, you could literally just paraphrase it as a reply to the top comment and get people to reply there lol, and noone will respond to the Beehaw comment :michael-laugh:

It's a little strange and frustrating yeah, I have to check other people's instances quite often if I don't already recognize it to make sure lemmygrad isn't blocked

This will probably be changed down the line, all it does currently is take you out of the conversation. If we can still reply to beehaw comments on lemmy.ml for example, then we can argue against them but they can't reply. Lemmy.ml though will still see our arguments.

what about instances that beehaw has defederated from pre-emptively, without that instance ever being federated with beehaw, like a certain hex bear dot net? Does that mean they wouldn't see our posts on, say lemmy.ml if we'd federate with them, but we would see theirs?

That sounds incredibly confusing. Add another to the pile of reasons I'm skeptical of federation.

It really won’t matter for hexbear at first, it’ll only be federated with lemmygrad

Hopefully we get the ability to personally block communities and instances before we federate with any other instance.

You can block communities on upstream lemmy, and I do think there are plans to let users block instances themselves eventually

    :geordi-no: Defederating from Lemmy

    :geordi-yes: defenestrating your server

I don't have a point I just think defenestrate is a neat word
