there can't be an efficiency increase because electric motors are basically the same efficiency across the RPM range.
The only reason ICE cars do it is because engines have torque/horsepower peaks across rev ranges and it aims to stay in the good ranges at different speeds. That's also why CVT (transmission type without distinct gears) is banned in F1, because it's too good for racing.
Consumer CVTs are all terrible though, which is why even automatic cars have gears
