O don't remember specifically those but I'm not surprised. When a burger is advertised as like a black bean burger or garden burger I trust it wayyy more lol. I say this as a guy who likes manual transmissions. Fake engine noises are already sus as hell, but at least with those you can make the argument that they're for pedestrians so your vehicle doesn't sneak up on them - the only thing this system does is reduce your efficiency until you learn to perfectly mimic what the computer would have done anyway.
at a recent pikes peak one of the electrics was using clips from some movie as their pedestrian warning sound.

Most sport.modes just change the throttle map. So when the pedal is at 50% the actual throttle us at 75% for example
As a person who first learned how to drive stick shift and drove one for about 5 years before getting an automatic transmission vehicle... I have no intention to go back to manual ever.
I personally love mine but again, car enthusiast. Like mostly hobbies just the act of doing the hobby is enjoyable.
I hope this is my last one though. If I ever buy a car again so help me it'll be electric. I didn't this time because I have literally no place to charge it and my landlord refused to add a plug even though I offered to pay for it. And before anyone is like WHY WOULD NEED A CAR because even though I live in one of the transit capitals in the US, my partner works outside the city and there's no way to get there without one. The only reason I have a manual is because all the connected IoT shit in cars is terrifying. Like how someone could just hack your car and force it to crash into tree at 100mph. Or software bugs leading to brakes not working, etc. I don't think mine is connected in that way but even if it is I can put it in neutral and turn the engine off with the key.

there can't be an efficiency increase because electric motors are basically the same efficiency across the RPM range.
The only reason ICE cars do it is because engines have torque/horsepower peaks across rev ranges and it aims to stay in the good ranges at different speeds. That's also why CVT (transmission type without distinct gears) is banned in F1, because it's too good for racing.
Consumer CVTs are all terrible though, which is why even automatic cars have gears
youd have a hard time finding one to practice on too. i drove manual for 10 years but gave it up cause my commute became longer. the only benefit is no transmission to go out on you, otherwise it probably is less gas efficient and more annoying to drive in traffic.
They used to be cheaper to fix and more gas efficient but now modern auto transmissions are highly efficient, and manuals are produced at such low numbers that replacing the transmission isn't as cheap.
And then you have the huge pain of driving in traffic or hilly terrain
if you don't abuse a manual the transmission can easily last the life of the car. but Honda CVTs are so reliable now, and ride way smoother than me shifting.

They’re still better than all but the most recent and advanced automatics when the driver is aware of what’s going on. I live in a mountainous area and even new automatics are always switching between bogging or racing trying to figure out how to handle the changing load. Just taking control and telling it what gear to stay in makes a world of difference if you have the +/- or paddles.
Still cheaper to fix too.
I prefer manual for some situations (I learned on and owned one for around 12 years), but I have a hard time suggesting it to anyone. Most of the auto drivers that struggle on mountain driver don't understand that there's a gear mode for low gear that solves some (not all) of the issues of driving on sloped roads.
My friend replaced his last manual with another and he's not super happy about it. Just isn't a great driving experience when you live in a high traffic urban center. We both agree if we lived somewhere more suburban or rural that the manual would be preferrable

This is something where I think we could set a standard "engine noise" that is loud enough for safety but doesn't carry into people's bedrooms and it would be a positive for society with no downsides whatsoever - which is why it will never happen.

I'd prefer cars make some kind of sound while they're driving to alert visually impaired people. I hate how most EVs are dead quiet. I'm a cyclist and several times an EV has passed too closely to me without a sound.
EVs should make a little "ahem" cough when they are coming within 2m of a bicycle or pedestrian
Apparently tire noise is far louder than engine noise even at moderate speed (with the exception of loud-ass motorcycles and such), so equivalent artificial noise for EVs shouldn't make that problem worse
My brain has been cared. I'm stuck in a shit city with shit infrastructure. Anyways I recently for the first time in my life bought a "new" (3 year old used) car. It's a 1.4L turboed sedan that is ridiculously quiet that I do not know if it is running half the time. Some fake engine noise could be beneficial for boomers like me who've been driving shit boxes for 20 years.
That said it's also manual cause I enjoy it, makes me feel more in control and have been driving stick all my life. But the shit so computerized and fly-by-wire that there's no feedback in the stick, the clutch pedal is fully dead and feels more like a switch than a pedal, the anti roll back, the electronic e-brake, the lockouts for shifting wrong, and the insane gearing ratio that has me doing 70km/hr in 6th gear.... it may as well be an automatic.
I hope I can get one more non-ev in my lifetime. :grillman:

the rimac concept car had a 2-speed to get higher top speeds but normal people driving certainly don't need that and racing heads should find an alternative to ruining tires
